The Death Of Painting

THE DEATH OF PAINTING 4/11/2014

From this topic,raise a series of questions. what is painting?.Do you think that the Renaissance in panting is dead, or it can or has never died?Do you think that the Renaissance had started before the first documented Renaissance and that the Renaissance may very well have started with the Cave artists? Do you ever think discovering the Cave Paintings was a Renaissance in itself? Do you ever think, what Leonardo Da Vinci might have thought when he had discovered the Cave Paintings in France?Have you ever thought that the very 'nature' of 'art' is 'creating' and that 'creating' is and of itself declared something new...? It is documented,the Renaissance started 14th-16th Centuries and if you want to define what is Renaissance,it is: Revival of art and leaning in Europe in 14th-16th Centuries...?What had happened before those documented Centuries?Again,do you think that the Renaissance in painting started with the Cave painters...?What if we go back to create paintings on Stones,would they say painting is 'alive' ?Painting has always been created on Stones,Clothe,human body,animals,wood and since the industrial age: glass,iron,cars,etc you name it, and all were influenced since the birth of the walls of Cave painting. Note,I was told in 2012 by an artist that,Contemporary painting doesn't confined to Canvas,agree,painting goes beyond to, car doors,hoods etc but if that is the case,the Renaissance painting documentation is late then, would you think...?Contemporary painting was influence from the Renaissance or the Cave...? Were the Cave artists thinking?I have heard that some artists and Connoisseurs of art are saying that,'Painting is Dead'.Where, what or whom has caused the influence of painting?Is it that, 'Painting is Dead or Painting Technique'?Lets look on the act of painting,what is painting?What is Contemporary painting? Is it 'what' or 'how' an artist paint that matters?Lets take the imagination on a journey and create a dialogue on the declaration: "Painting is Dead".

Words And Painting,are They Distinct?

WORDS AND PAINTING,ARE THEY DISTINCT?

Art by its very "nature", "organic",a "language"; an entity in its own realm.
Distinctly perceptible,different in kind and 'nature'.
It has its own 'unique' 'intelligence' to speak/communicate by and for itself;its enigmatic,mysterious poetic nature interprets itself;it doesn't need any help; the 'intent' and 'impact' of its 'force' and 'power' to speak,'man', 'cannot' describe it. It has its own individual & unique energy',its own "DNA";Art is 'didactic',it informs you,it doesn't take instructions, It speaks "ONE""LANGUAGE"; By John Powell, © copyright 2013

Does Art Sales Based Upon Who Sits In The Oval Office?

Does Art Sales Based Upon Who Sits In The Oval Office?

CONTEMPORARY ART AUCTION-NEW YORK @ SOTHEBY'S NOV 13-14/2012

*WILL THE ELECTION AFFECT ART SALES-DOES ART SALES BASED UPON WHO SITS IN THE OVAL OFFICE? Artists tend to be as in-tune politically as anyone. Depending on whom you voted for you may be elated or you may be disappointed. Regardless, I have heard artists explain why their sales are down as well as why their sales are up based upon who sits in the oval office. Sure ,elected officials may come up with policies which you feel hurt your businesses as well as help. Do you think it is what you make of your business and how flexible you are in helping it to evolve?

That does not mean you can’t see success even during times when the economy is less than ideal.The good line is there are plenty of opportunities for artists to see success in sales,investment is one reason because buying art is like buying land in either economy.You may find you have to work a little harder to get your work in front of potential buyers but no matter who is the current president, the only person you have to blame for your failures or successes is yourself. If you voted for the losing candidate, don’t let that get you down. Get determined and stay focused. If you voted for the President and are confident in his ability to move the economy forward, be happy but don’t forget it is still you who are responsible how successful you become.
NB.I was invited as the 'key note' speaker at Rotary International to speak on the topic:(Art and the Economy-Hit or Miss) which was featured on www.absolutearts.com please find my article below and one of America's best writers name:Barney Davey,on art had reviewed it ,,see below my article & the writer's review after;

ART AND THE ECONOMY-HIT OR MISS!!!
There are many elements involved in an economy but i choose to look at art;Art appreciation is a gateway to the intellectual capacity of the mind,which opens the door for learning because in art you find cultural diversity,where learning first starts;To appreciate diverse art forms,one has to be,first culturally diverse/aware because it is through art all forms of cultures are seen;
It is said that credit, is the life blood of any economy, art is one credit that helps to detect "signs" of an economy?It is in the art collection of any country that can help one to see the wealth of a country;So,you can see the important place art plays in an economy;It helps us to see what one could term the early "signs" of a good or bad economy in a country,hence art is about visual signs but most people mainly who i would call the connoisseurs of the economy,may have not being looking at art as an element for signs for an economical depression; A work of art may be understood as a conductor from the artist's mind to the viewer's but it may never reach the viewer.With the advent of the Internet,artists can set up their own websites and be seen;
The past years have been a taxing ride for the Online art market.The Internet art economy,which drew entrepreneurs Online and inspired venture capitalists and investors to infuse dot-com companies with cash,in 2001;Nancy Valentino, senior vice president of Christies.com,said (quote) "if someone had told me on January 1 what would have happened to art on the Internet by Nov 1,i would not have believed them,it's been a frantic year /"passion",(end quote). Those who are skeptical of the Internet's potential as a marketplace for high end art note the financial instability of the past years,optimists point to an increasing number of new collectors who have emerged Online. In contrast ,the Jamaican art scene has its share of ups and downs,where companies are not buying but quietly, serious art collectors have being buying,in 2008 a billionaire and a major art collector,purchased up to $60.ooo,ooo million worth of art works,from a major Jamaican fine art collector and one of Jamaicas top artist/painter.A lesser known artist who is one of Jamaican most important emerging painter, who's entire solo exhibition sold out with paintings value $150.000-$1,000,000 million dollars. More so, in a time of an economical melt down,art collectors look for artists who are serious to collect."Good Art",even though you might say its a relitive term, has the capacity to flow through any depression and will always break the monotonous flow of any period and with stand the test of time,beyond boundaries.Whenever there is a time of "significance",people tend to look at art more for answers or healing,it has always been there but was never been given attention;Art speaks through "time" irrispective of any special period,art is time and vice-versa,its a way of life;Its real and if you are not being real, it tells you; Art speaks economics,if the shapers and makers of the economy were looking at art more,they would have seen it coming;We take it for granted when we are looking at art and so,we are bewildered by saying but thats what i have being seeing in the expressions of the people.We tend to look at (wall street) for the answers but wall street should look at art more because it is in the arts most times the signs exist first because it tells us the reality of the time.So, when next someone asked you,what is the state of the economy,tell them,just look at art;Art is a visual sign/language,also the "economy" and the language used to discuss both art and the economy,are "similar"...? What are the elements used in discussing the economy and what are the elements used in discussing art,are they similar or dissimilar?Do they have or move in the same pattern or form?What is economy?Is the economy life?Art depicts life;Does the economy relate with art?Who or what dictates the economy?The economy is a way of life,art is also a way of life;

Art and the Economy - Hit or Miss!
John Powell is a Jamaican artist who I met through my guest blogging on Absolute Arts. It is a wonderful by-product of being involved with the Internet that we get to meet people from just about anywhere. Though we have never met, I consider him a friend and appreciate the efforts he has put into not only creating a body of work, but prodigiously promoting it. He hasn't let living in a Caribbean island nation keep him from being in touch with collectors and others who can help him grow his stature as an artist.
John turned guest blogger himself on Absolute Arts in the April 25 slot. His topic was titled the same as the subject of this post. In his article, Art and the Economy - Hit or Miss!, he makes some very insightful and thought provoking comments about how art is an accurate predictor of the economy. To his mind, more so than Wall Street. I commend you to read it.
I had this to say about his comments:
John,

You make an eloquent and erudite point about art and its importance on many levels. Art teaches us, it provokes us, it touches emotions and expresses them visually when words fail us.

I don't have a timeline on art and the economy through the ages. But, I sense your instincts and perceptions regarding it are valid, perhaps now more than ever. Whatever the case, I agree art is a leading factor and those who know how to interpret what it is saying stand to benefit from it.

In their day, the Impressionists were reviled for breaking tradition of realistic and allegorical paintings. Their work foretold the huge changes about to unravel in the early 20th Century. Their loose interpretation was a maverick style unacceptable to the art cognoscenti of the day. But, it was a response to the coming machine age of mass made products and marvelous inventions that transformed daily lives.

The Impressionists' lives and work straddled the period of horse and buggy to the introduction of motor cars, electricity in homes and assembly lines. I think it was a revolt against the past hidebound way of creating art and it was a statement against the uniformity that machines and mass production brought on.

I'm neither steeped nor astute enough on the world art scene to dissemble what artists are attempting to tell us today. My guess it would be that as world citizens we need more than ever to find ways to live in harmony with each other and with our environment. Certainly, your country's most famous artist, Bob Marley, was an early adopter of such a philosophy. And, what a profound effect his work has made around the globe.

Thanks for writing such an insightful and thought provoking article!

To Title Or Not?

To Title Or Not?

TO TITLE OR NOT?

When an artwork leaps it's emotions,it gives itself the title;i don't give a title;the artwork informs me;i listen because an artwork is a question.'Art defines itself'.The 'spirit' permeates the pores of my concepts and each image 'reads' exact emotions that relate them to the given event so, I don't marry to the 'content' of my art;only to the 'spirit' of the 'content'. Some lessons in art cannot be taught,they 'MUST' be 'lived' to 'LEARN' them.A title describes.However,i cannot describe it,it is too 'spiritual' to express,it is the same expressive 'ENERGY' as the work itself,transfused between energies.A 'title', is an inspiration,evoked from an awakening reality in which the visible world and the interior reality interpenetrate and fused.The 'ACCENT' should be placed on the 'POWER' of the 'EMOTION'. To give an a appropriate title,you need to see the 'INVISIBLE'; only if the viewer can 'LISTEN'!!!

Mona Lisa Done On Walnut

Mona Lisa Done On Walnut

Did you know that The (Mona Lisa) painting was done/painted on (Walnut) a wood type material?*Earliest copy of 'Mona Lisa' found in the Prado/(Museum Nacional del Prado),which was painted in Leonardo's studio created side by side with the original that now hangs in the Louvre.There are dozens of surviving replicas from the 16th & 17th Centuries;*The sitter of the (Mona Lisa) name was :Lisa Gherardini,the wife of the Florentine cloth merchant,Francesco del Giocondo;*The copy was done by one of Leonardo's pupils.*Although the (precise date of the original is uncertain,the Louvre states it was between 1503 & 1506;*The Louvre original is '77 cm x 53cm and the Prado's copy 76 cm x 57 cm'.*The copy panel was examined and found to be (Walnut),which was used in Italy (as was popular,used for the original (Mona Lisa).*The London's National Gallery,exhibition of "Leonardo da Vinci :painter at the court of Milan"( until Feburary 5/2012).*NB.This exhibition is said by Art historians,the largest/most important exhibition EVER of Leonardo's work EVER SEEN in ONE PLACE in HISTORY in LONDON & in the WORLD,probably will never be SEEN again...;*NB.There is a MOVIE of the tour of the exhibition coming out soon in the Cinemas,which is the 1st MOVIE EVER DONE of an Art exhibition. The Art World Most Important Exhibition Of All Times

December 14th, 2011

The Art World Most Important Exhibition Of All Times

THE ART WORLD'S MOST IMPORTANT EXHIBITION OF ALL TIMES...?!!!

Leonardo da Vinci,court painter in Milan,the most revered universal genius,is said to be the most important artist of all times...? The National Gallery of London, has put together an exhibition of his work.NB.There are ONLY FIFTEEN of Leonardo's paintings in existence and to have nine of them in ONE place is probably will never be seen again in "history"...?One of the National Gallery officials says quote "The paintings came from all over the world,including drawings are on view,probably will never be seen together in the SAME ROOM" end quote. 'They were being borrowed from different galleries,came from Milan,Rome,'The Louvre' to name a few'.NB.The show focuses on looking at Leonardo's 'SKILL' as a painter.NB.The officials says quote " it is the most popular exhibition todate,thousands of people coming from all over the world,making it this year's most significant art events".end quote.NB.The last Supper is not in the exhibition because it is a 'Mural' on a wall in 'Milan',is a 15th Century painting, was created for Duke Ludovico and the 'Mona Lisa', was too fragile to travel.NB.The exhibition took more than five years to put together.Curator Luke Syson, a well respected/known Renaissance art historian explains how art institutions from all over the world were persuaded to take part.This latest exhibition is "the most complete display of Leonardo da Vinci's rare surviving paintings ever held".The exhibition has brought together more than 90 artworks from over 30 institutions and collectors.Luke Syson,
" We started thinking about this five years ago,when we were beginning to plan the restoration of the Virgin Of the Rocks,so an exhibition to celebrate that project seemed like the right thing to do"."I realised that although there'd been great exhibitions of Leonardo's drawings in the past- including one at the Hayward when i was a young lad- there hadn't been one that focused specifically on his career as a painter".END QUOTE.The National Gallery realised during their course of research for the show is that every age invents its own Leonardo.For the late 20th Century,his science and his extraordinarily prescient inventions obviously chimed with the times.Leaonard's early years: Born near the Tuscan hill-town of Vinci.An illegitimate child,he was raised by his paternal grandfather.His father had a flourishing legal practice in the city of Florence,where Leonardo received his early artistic training with the Sculptor Andrea Verrocchio.Leonardo created some of the most famous images in Europe's art.He influenced generations of artists and not only artists but all who came across his work to my mind.*NB.Show opening date: November 9/2011 and ends February 5/2012.

Intuition Never Lie,listen To It

INTUITION NEVER LIE,LISTEN TO IT

Every thing in life is a dot and one dot influence another so, every dot has a lesson; One should learn from each dot and every dot is a teacher,who teaches different things of life.One cannot connect the dots of the future,one only can connect the dots of the past;What if every dot teaches you the same thing,which one would you listen to? Everything in life is a lesson but it is 'who' teaches you the lessons???

Love And Art

Love  And Art

LOVE & ART

I don't subscribe to the dictionary nor any man made explanation of Love,no one can explain Love,its not descriptive; God is Love/creator of Love.God is nature as nature is Love, so,let no one tell you about Love,Love is not about telling;Have you ever watched an artist create?How can one know if Love is real?Love is Life & Life is Love;Its like Art is life and Art cannot lie,as nature cannot lie;Don't go out searching for love,Love is You,Love is the presence.I don't wait nor rely on anyone for Love,'i am Love,you are Love';

People have being saying, believed and told for centuries that,one has to be told that, they are being Loved,especially Women who says this 'Famous' line,'he don't say he Loves me';It is cultured that,Women wants to 'hear' 'words' to respond... because they were made that way...;Who came up with that?There is also,a saying that,'words' has 'Power'...;But there is also,the saying that,it is 'YOU' who has to give it 'Power' of influence...?I listened on the radio last week while, two Women were being interviewed,they drove around America looking for Love and met people,with the same problem(s).Love is all in the psyche...;They say the 'mind' is the sexiest body part but not when it's the only part actively engaged...;

It is a personal experience,no one ever/can experience Love and tell you about it, for one to feel Loved.Love is as personal as individuals are,(relative)...; Love,its like original Art ,organic;The most important language of Art is,(observation),so,if and when someone tells you,they Love you,(observe); Pablo Picasso once said,quote" i don't seek,i find,"end quote; What is the relationship between 'Love & Art'?I read some where,where a young lady says that,'quote' "i am perplex by Love", it has influenced me to write this article;What is the co-relation between the possibility to Love without Loving 'God','Nature' & 'Art'? I don't mean the scientific definitions of the philosophy of Love.I don't listen to that stuff;As an artist i know about dimensions of readings.'Love', you can't 'read';No finite mind can describe it.'Love' is time,timeless,infinite, it repels what it's not and attracts what it is;If you want to find Love,look at 'YOU';You are the epitome of Love,you have to first find Love in You;You don't have to look in a man made mirror to see 'You','You are "The" mirror of Love;'You are not a reflection of Love,'You are' and stop looking around for it; 'Have you found the relationship between Love,Nature & Art? Love is God and 'ONLY' God can Love,we don't even know it, to describe the degrees of this timeless force;Science don't have the capacity to understand the human body,its timeless,as the spirit and the mind;Have 'You' even 'SEEN' 'Love' on this planet?'Observe'!!!

Role Of The Museum

Role Of The Museum

DEBATE ABOUT "THE ROLE OF MUSEUMS"

Museums are our new churches,as agreed by many.Millions flock to them to be inspired,or distracted from the times...;

*Couldn't museums do a better job at displaying art in a way that fully engages our emotions?* Why can't museums organize their collections in such a way as to convey art's life-enhancing possibilities and even inspire us to become better people?*Can art make you become a better person?*But isn't that taking the "art as religion" line a bit too seriously?*Does it implies that,museums have a social function,even a didactic role to play?*The museums ever soaring visitors proved that museums are already doing a great job?
*"ARGUE FOR OR AGAINST THE MOTION": MUSEUMS ARE BAD AT TELLING US WHY ART MATTERS?
